USC Upstate baseball players Wylie Waters and Trey Bentley were recognized on Apr. 13 as the Big South Conference’s Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively.

This recognition marks the first time in nearly a year that USC Upstate has secured both weekly honors from the conference. The awards highlight recent strong performances by both athletes.

Waters, who is from Vancouver, British Columbia, extended his hitting streak to six games and his streak of reaching base to eleven games. He recorded multiple hits and runs batted in during several games last week, including three home runs. Waters twice drove in four runs in a single game—once against Western Carolina and again during game two versus Charleston Southern, where he finished just one hit short of completing a cycle.

Bentley, from Mulberry, Florida, has now reached base in seventeen consecutive games for USC Upstate. Over the past week, he had multi-hit performances at both ends of the schedule. In addition to homering at Western Carolina while driving in two runs midweek, Bentley added another home run during game two against Charleston Southern.

This is Waters’ second career win for this award category while it is Bentley’s first career honor. The last time USC Upstate captured multiple weekly conference awards was May 19 of last year; it has been since April 14 last year that winners came from both categories.

Looking ahead, supporters are encouraged to attend Sparty’s Ball on May 15 at The Piedmont Club—a fundraising event for student-athletes at USC Upstate.
