Wofford women’s basketball defeats Western Carolina with strong third quarter

The Wofford women’s basketball team secured a 73-54 victory against Western Carolina in Cullowhee, North Carolina, on Saturday afternoon. The win improves Wofford’s record to 14-11 overall and 8-3 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina drops to 3-22 overall and remains winless in conference games at 0-11.

Wofford gained momentum with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Catamounts by 24 points during that period. The Terriers shot 47.5 percent from the field, making nine three-pointers at a rate of 50 percent. Western Carolina finished with a shooting percentage of 44.7 percent and made five of its eighteen attempts from beyond the arc.

Wofford was effective at the free throw line, converting eight out of nine opportunities for an accuracy rate of nearly 89 percent. The Terriers also controlled rebounding, finishing with a total of 34 compared to Western Carolina’s 25, including thirteen offensive rebounds that led to fifteen second-chance points. Additionally, Wofford forced eighteen turnovers from Western Carolina, resulting in twenty points.

Gabby Mundy led all scorers with twenty-five points and made five three-pointers on ten attempts. Queen Ikhiuwu contributed fourteen points and had a team-high nine rebounds along with three assists. Toni Warren added eleven points while Elli Porter scored ten.

The game began with Gabby Mundy scoring the first basket as Wofford opened with an eight-point run and established an early lead. Despite efforts by Western Carolina to close the gap throughout the first half, Wofford maintained control and entered halftime ahead by nine points.

In the second half, Wofford extended its advantage following another run sparked by Queen Ikhiuwu’s layup and continued defensive pressure that resulted in turnovers for Western Carolina.

Looking ahead, Wofford will return home for its final two games of the regular season. Mercer is scheduled to visit on Thursday, February 19 for education day with tip-off set for 11:00 a.m., followed by Samford closing out Wofford’s home schedule on Saturday, February 21.
