Wofford men’s tennis falls to Samford in conference matchup

The Wofford men’s tennis team lost 7-0 to Samford University on Sunday at the Samford Tennis Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Samford secured the doubles point by winning matches at the #3 and #2 positions. The match at the #1 doubles spot, featuring Jack Deveney and Valdemar Dubin from Wofford, was decided by a tiebreaker that Samford won 7-6.

In singles play, Samford took the first win at the #5 position. The Bulldogs then won a three-set match at #2 singles, followed by a victory at #4 singles to clinch the overall match. Wins at the #3 position and two more competitive matches completed the sweep for Samford. At the top singles spot, Parker Mariencheck of Wofford won his first set 6-0 but dropped the next two sets. In the final match at #6 singles, Jack Burdell of Wofford lost his opening set, recovered with a 6-4 win in the second set, but ultimately fell in a third-set tiebreaker that ended 16-14 in favor of Samford.

Wofford now holds a season record of 6-5 overall and 1-1 in Southern Conference play. The team will return home to host Belmont on Thursday, March 5, at Reeves Tennis Center.
