This week in Greater Spartanburg history.

Born August 26, 1952, in Whitmire, South Carolina

Donnie Shell was born in Whitmire, South Carolina, on August 26, 1952. He attended high school in Whitmire, then played college football at South Carolina State. He went undrafted in 1974 but signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played 14 seasons with the team as a strong safety. Shell was part of four Super Bowl championship teams. He earned five Pro Bowl selections. Known for his tackling and interceptions, he retired with 51 career interceptions. In 2020, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His football career began in Whitmire.
