Bishop Holston appoints new Marion District superintendent

Bishop L. Jonathan Holston, resident bishop of the South Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church, has appointed the Rev. Steven Lee Brown as superintendent of the Marion District.

Rev. Brown, senior pastor of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Greenwood since 2017, will succeed the Rev. Tim Rogers after the 2023 Annual Conference.

Rev. Rogers has served the Marion District as superintendent since 2015. He is retiring at the 2023 Annual Conference.

Rev. Brown was born in Richmond, Virginia, and graduated from Wake Forest University in 1979 with a bachelor of arts degree in English and from the University of South Carolina in 1982 with a master of education degree.

Over a decade, he worked as a construction project manager, as a high school teacher and coach, and as director of leisure ministries and youth at Trenholm Road UMC in Columbia.

He was ordained as a full elder in 1995, after his graduation in 1993 from Duke Divinity School with a master of divinity degree. In addition to his appointment to St. Mark-Greenwood, Rev. Brown has served St. Matthew UMC in Greenville, Trinity UMC in North Myrtle Beach, Cornerstone UMC in Rock Hill, and Central UMC in Florence.

In addition to Rev. Brown’s work in local churches, he has served in many ways, including as a member of the Conference Commission on Equitable Compensation. He has served as chairperson and member of the Greenville and Marion District Committees on Congregational Development, and as a member of the Greenwood District Committee on Ordained Ministry. He also has served as a member of the Trustees of the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, and has been director of the Penn Center Salkehatchie Summer Service Camp since 2001.

Rev. Brown is married to Karen J. Brown. They have three adult children and four grandchildren. Rev. Brown enjoys reading, music and sports.
