Main Street Mall: Spartanburg’s Great Urban Experiment is now on display at the Headquarters Library.
During the 1970s and 1980s, downtown Spartanburg was in freefall while suburban shopping was booming. Desperate to save the historic heart of town, the city and the Chamber of Commerce launched a bold plan to bring life back to downtown by creating a fountain- and tree-filled pedestrian zone called the Main Street Mall. This exhibit, on display now through July 8th, re-introduces the mall to modern Spartanburg and touches on the reasons for its creation and demise.
On June 30th at 6:00 pm, exhibit curator Brad Steinecke will give a presentation at the Headquarters Library on the Main Street Mall and other plans to revitalize downtown Spartanburg between the 1960s and 2000s.
